Network's Summary of "Immigration Reform" in the last Congress

Much to our disappointment, the role of the 2006 elections turned immigration into a political leverage tool; a piecemeal enforcement-only approach versus a more visionary comprehensive form of legislation. The “Secure Fence Act” was passed, authorizing fencing construction and security systems along the border, though the widespread needs of systemic immigration needs were not met.

NETWORK will continue to put the pressure on Congress that 'enforcement only' measures are not enough – we must do more than put a simple band-aid on the issue and strive to address provisions allowing an earned path to citizenship, family visa backlog reduction, and new legal channels for immigration.
