Find a Sister

Atlantic-Midwest SSND’s journey to Hungary

Four SSND’s from the Atlantic-Midwest Province and a sister from Hungary in front of a monument to George Washington in a Hungarian park.

Two weeks in Budapest, Hungary left Sisters Bernice Feilinger, Connie Carrigan, Julice Bots and Justine Nutz with never-to-be-forgotten experiences.  Forty students aged 12-18, both boys and girls, were their unexpected protégés for two weeks.  Mornings were filled with English lessons and afternoons were highlighted with English-speaking field trips given by our students.  Balaton Bolgar (the largest lake in Eastern Europe) was a fun-filled camping weekend with pitched tents and English conversation while swimming in the lake!

All 96 sisters of the Hungarian Province, some with canes and walkers, are up-and-about.  All in the Motherhouse were present for prayer, Mass and delicious healthy meals with Hungarian paprika readily available!  We were entertained most graciously by all the Sisters through English “table and touring conversation.”

In addition to pastoral ministries, our sisters run four large schools with an average of 1,500 students in each and each school has boarders.  In late August, the Motherhouse is holding a three-day symposium based on the Call to Solidarity, to honor the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian Province.  All the sisters and their 350 lay teachers will attend.

We sisters from the Atlantic-Midwest Province are grateful for and appreciate the opportunity given us to be SSND presence with our Sisters in Budapest.  Thank you.
