Decolonization Informed by the Bible
White Christian Nationalism has many of us perplexed because, after all, we are white, we are Christian, and our faith is civic.
But White Christian Nationalism has nothing to do with the true Christian faith as revealed in the God of the Bible. Adherents of White Christian Nationalism believe that our lands were founded by Christians who modelled our social environments with a mission to spread the religion and its ideals in the face of non-whites.
One has only to think of how the first explorers came to Turtle Island (North America) equipped with Bible and sword. The Bible has been used by colonial societies as a weapon to dispossess Indigenous and racialized peoples of their lands, cultures and spiritualities.
But could it be reinterpreted by the voices of the oppressed as a tool for decolonization? Can we re-imagine the text for the sake of reparative futures? Learn more in the book, Unsettling the Word: Biblical Experiments in Decolonization. Submitted by the Dismantling Racism Committee
