By Sister Mary Heather MacKinnon, SSND
On June 6, 2024, I was honored as I retired after more than 30 years of ministry with the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), which serves 46 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, and 3 continuing education facilities in four cities in Southern Ontario.
I was honored for special contributions including the creation of Theological Education for Leadership (TEL), a programme for the superintendents, principals, and vice-principals, and the Eco Café, a book group designed to support teachers in their development of ecological consciousness and action for justice. These and other programmes will continue to be offered by my Master’s degree students whom I taught at the University of St. Michael’s College at the Toronto School of Theology.
My retirement completes 56 wonderful years in formal education during which I taught students in every grade in elementary and secondary schools as well as undergraduate and graduate scholars in Ontario, and students in Forms 1, 3, and 6 at our former school in Lingfield, Surrey, England.
Pictured below are six SSNDs who joined in the celebration with me. Sisters pictured, left-to-right: Sisters Yvonne Nosal, Barbara Paleczny, Maureen Sweeney, Martin de Porres Kimpel, Celeste Reinhart, Mary Heather MacKinnon, Rosemary Howarth.
